1. Ethylene polymerization

There are three main methods for the production of PE wax by ethylene polymerization. One is polymerization with a free radical catalyst at high temperature and high pressure; the second step is polymerization with a Ziegler catalyst at low pressure; the third is polymerization with a metallocene catalyst.

2. Polyethylene cracking method

The molecular weight distribution of PE wax produced by legal polymerization is narrow, and the relative molecular weight can be controlled artificially, but it must be carried out in a large-scale device, and the capital investment is large. Domestic manufacturers generally use high molecular weight polyethylene pyrolysis. The raw material used in this method can be polyethylene resin or polyethylene waste plastic. The former product grade is high, the latter product grade is low. High molecular weight polyethylene can be thermally cracked into low molecular weight PE wax under the condition of isolating air, and the properties related to the structure of the prepared PE wax (such as crystallinity, density, hardness and melting point) are affected by the cracking raw material. The cracking method is divided into cracking kettle method and extrusion method. The cracking kettle method is a batch processing method, which is suitable for manufacturers with low output and capacity. Extrusion is a continuous production, suitable for large output, high capacity enterprises.

3. Polyethylene by-product purification

The PE wax product can be recovered from the by-product mixture of low molecular weight components and solvent in the polymerization of ethylene to produce polyethylene. After the solvent and initiator are removed from the by-products of the polyethylene plant, the molecular weight distribution of the product is still very wide, which limits its application field and needs to be further purified by solvent separation. This by-product PE wax products usually contain molecules with a relative molecular weight of about 1000, so its mechanical strength, heat resistance and other physical properties are lower than those of PE wax products produced by ethylene polymerization.

4. Modification of PE wax.

Polyethylene is a non-polar molecule. If polar groups can be attached to the molecule, the application field will be greatly expanded. These functionalized PE waxes can be produced by copolymerization of ethylene and oxygen-containing monomers, and can also be modified by introducing carboxyl groups into PE waxes by chemical methods such as oxidation and grafting, and then further modified by chemical reactions such as esterification, amidation, and saponification.
