  Production capacity and market of paraffin wax

China is a big paraffin producer in the world, and its resources are mainly concentrated in PetroChina and Sinopec. At present, there are about 11 large-scale refineries with paraffin production equipment in China. In 2017, the domestic paraffin output was about 1.2 million tons, of which 700000 tons were consumed in China and 500000 tons were exported.

Paraffin production is mainly based on paraffin-based crude oil. At present, the most suitable for the production of paraffin wax is Daqing oil. Take the four refineries of PetroChina Daqing Petrochemical Company and Daqing Refining and Chemical Company as examples; take the chemical company, Fushun Petrochemical Company and Dalian Petrochemical Company, which mainly process paraffin produced by Daqing Petroleum, as examples. According to statistics, in 2017, the paraffin output of enterprises mainly processing Daqing oil reached more than 800,000 tons. China Fushun Petrochemical Company is China's largest paraffin production base, paraffin production capacity of about 500000 tons, exported to the United States, Mexico, Southeast Asia and other countries. Jingmen Petrochemical, Nanyang refined wax plant, Jinan Petrochemical, Maoming Petrochemical, Gaoqiao Petrochemical paraffin production capacity of about 400000 tons. In 2017, about 200000 tons of paraffin wax were exported to the United States. In 2018, affected by the Sino-US trade war, paraffin wax exports were blocked, the oversupply of domestic paraffin wax became increasingly obvious, and the sales pressure increased.

Paraffin wax is mainly used in candles, packaging, synthetic plates, rubber tires, food, chemicals, electronics, medicine, textiles, electronic equipment and other fields in China.

 Production Technology of Fischer-Tropsch Wax

First, coal, natural gas or biomass is used as raw material and converted into synthesis gas (carbon monoxide H2). Syngas reacts with a catalyst to produce liquid hydrocarbons. Then, after the hydrofinishing reaction, the oxygenates and olefins are saturated and converted to a mixture dominated by paraffins. The medium-high temperature iron-based crude wax is mainly composed of C20 ~ C70 alkanes, and the content of n-alkanes is about 85%. Crude wax is separated by short-path distillation, cut and deoiled to form components with different carbon numbers, such as C20 ~ C40 n-alkanes of Fischer-Tropsch wax 60, C30 ~ C50 n-alkanes of Fischer-Tropsch wax 70, and C30 ~ C70 n-alkanes of Fischer-Tropsch wax 100.

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process is the core technology of indirect coal liquefaction. The catalytic systems used are mainly iron-based and cobalt-based. At present, among the four major future energy sources, the top three adopt high-temperature iron-based catalytic system, and the fourth adopts low-temperature iron-based catalytic system. The carbon number of crude wax produced by high temperature iron-based catalyst method is C20 ~ C90. The content of n-alkane is 85% ~ 90%. After fine separation, the high-temperature iron-based crude wax mainly produces 60, 70, 95 and 100 Fischer-Tropsch wax products. The oil content of 60 Fischer-Tropsch wax products is 4% ~ 6%, that of 70 Fischer-Tropsch wax products is 2% ~ 4%, and the highest melting point of high-melting Fischer-Tropsch wax drops is 105. The needle penetration is greater than 1. The oil content is about 1%.

The carbon number of crude wax produced by low temperature iron-based and cobalt-based catalysts is C20 ~ C90. The normal alkane content is 95% ~ 98%. After the low-temperature iron base and cobalt base are refined and separated, the main products are 52, 60, 70, 105, 110 and 115 brands of Fischer-Tropsch wax products. The oil content of Fischer-Tropsch wax products is 1.4~1.7 at 60 and the yield of Fischer-Tropsch wax products is 0.3~0.5 at 70. Cobalt-based wax has a long carbon chain, so the melting point of the wax is higher, the content of high-temperature iron-based crude wax oil is about 5% higher than that of cobalt-based wax, the penetration force is large, the wax is coarse and soft, and the hardness is low. Therefore, the current domestic and foreign markets of co-based Fischer-Tropsch wax recognition degree is higher.
